Bio

Chris Stapleton is an American singer and songwriter. Chris was born Christopher Alvin Stapleton on 4/15/1978 in Kentucky and grew up in Staffordsville, KY. Chris graduated as class valedictorian from Johnson Central High School in 1996. After high school, he attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, to study engineering, but left after one year to focus on the local music scene.

When Chris moved to Nashville for college in 2001, it took him four days to obtain a music publishing deal. For the next decade after landing the deal, Chris became a well-known and highly sought-after songwriter. He worked on many songs that became hits for well-known artists such as George Strait, Luke Bryan, Lee Ann Womack, Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and others.

From 2008-2010, Chris was the frontman for the Bluegrass group called The SteelDrivers. The band released two albums and received three Grammy nominations. In 2010, he formed a rock band called The Jompson Brothers. The group released one album and served as the opening act for the Zac Brown Band.

In 2013, Chris started to venture into a solo career of his own and signed with Mercury Nashville, but his single “What Are You Listening To?” was not successful, and as a result, his album project was discarded.

He then partnered with co-producer Dave Cobb to record his debut album Traveller which was released in 2015 and ultimately went platinum. At the 2015 Country Music Association Awards, Chris became the first artist ever to win Album of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year and New Artist of the Year in the same year.

In 2016, the Grammy’s awarded Chris four nominations for which he took home the win for two- Best Country Solo Performance and Best Country Album for Traveller.

In 2018, Chris won three more Grammys for Best Country Album (From A Room: Volume 1), Best Country Song (“Broken Halos”), and Best Country Solo Performance (“Either Way”).

Chris saw more Grammy success in 2022 with wins for Best Country Album for his 2020 album Starting Over, Best Country Song for “Cold,” and Best Solo Country Performance for “You Should Probably Leave.”

Chris is married to Morgane Stapleton (Haynes), who is also a singer and songwriter. The couple has five children, who they mostly keep out of the spotlight. In 2018, Chris told The Boot, “I signed up for this; my children did not. I am a very private person, and in that respect, I keep my children out of it. They’re children, and they deserve the chance to be children.”
